Bioluminescence in cephalopods: biodiversity, biogeography and research trends

چکیده
Numerous terrestrial and marine organisms, including cephalopods, are capable of light emission. In addition to communication, bioluminescence is used for attraction defense mechanisms. The present review aims to: (i) updated information on the taxonomic diversity luminous cephalopods morphological features, (ii) describe large-scale biogeographic patterns, (iii) show research trends over last 50 years cephalopod bioluminescence. According our database (834 species), 32% all known species can emit light, oegopsid myopsid squids, sepiolids, octopuses, representatives several other smaller orders (bathyteuthids, monotypic vampire “squid”, Vampyroteuthis infernalis ram’s horn Spirula spirula ). Most have a combination photophores in different locations, which organs head region dominant, followed by associated with arms tentacles internal photophores. Regarding patterns organs, most diverse ocean Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Indian Oceans. least Southern Arctic publication trends, systematic revealed that, between 1971 2020, 277 peer-reviewed studies were published bioluminescent cephalopods. has been done single species, Hawaiian bobtail squid Euprymna scolopes . interest this mostly due its species-specific symbiotic relationship bacterium Vibrio fischeri , as model study Eukaryote–Prokaryote symbiosis. Because there many knowledge gaps about biology biogeography light-producing new state-of-the-art techniques (e.g., eDNA monitoring) help achieve finer resolution species’ distributions. Moreover, effects climate change stressors processes nonexistent. Future needed assess such impacts at levels biological organization, potential broad-scale changes, understand implications food web dynamics.

Biodiversity and Biogeography
As we have seen, life has been important in shaping its own environment throughout its 3.8 Ga* geologically recorded history. It has influenced earth-surface temperatures (Classes 2, 9, 10) through its involvement in the geochemical cycles that determine the world oceans salt content and the atmospheres composition (Classes 7-10). Overall, lifes effects have tended to compensate for the ther...
متن کاملBiodiversity and biogeography of the atmosphere
The variation of life has predominantly been studied on land and in water, but this focus is changing. There is a resurging interest in the distribution of life in the atmosphere and the processes that underlie patterns in this distribution. Here, we review our current state of knowledge about the biodiversity and biogeography of the atmosphere, with an emphasis on micro-organisms, the numerica...
متن کاملTrends in Stream Biodiversity Research since the River Continuum Concept
Lotic environments contain a disproportionate amount of biodiversity given their relatively small proportion of the worldwide landscape. We conducted a systematic literature search of research directed towards understanding factors that influence biodiversity in lotic habitats, published in 31 major ecological and freshwater science journals from 1981 to 2014. Our goal was to characterize emerg...
متن کاملPYCNOIB: Biodiversity and Biogeography of Iberian Pycnogonids
Biodiversity and biogeographic studies comparing the distribution patterns of benthic marine organisms across the Iberian Atlantic and Mediterranean waters are scarce. The Pycnogonida (sea spiders) are a clear example of both endemicity and diversity, and are considered a key taxon to study and monitor biogeographic and biodiversity patterns. This is the first review that compiles data about ab...
متن کاملResearch Focuses and Trends in Multiple Sclerosis: A Scientometric Analysis
The purpose of this scientometric study is to analyze the multiple sclerosis research in Science Citation Index-Expanded from 1992 to 2019 in order to determine the top features, trends, and topics. Articles related to multiple sclerosis in the section of title, abstract, keywords, and KeyWords Plus were retrieved from the Science Citation Index-Expanded and analyzed based on various indicators...
